New Chair in Greek at Glasgow

Wow. Professor Douglas MacDowell (graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow from 1971-2001, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the British Academy) retired in 2001 and the Chair in Greek went unfilled due to university cuts. After his recent passing, it was discovered he left £2.4 million in his will to re-establish the Chair in Greek for the University of Glasgow. This is a big gift that will go a long way to elevating Glasgow’s profile around the world in Classics, even if it will be tough to get students to want to come live there.

About T.M. Law

I am a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Oriental Studies in the University of Oxford. I teach Hebrew & Jewish Studies, and Early Eastern Christianity. My research to date has been focused on the textual history of the Bible, but I am now also working on biblical perspectives on social ethics. My main concerns in the latter area are immigration and asylum, economics, and hip hop music.
